Yudanaka is a small town in the mountains above Nagano that is famous for its onsens and hot springs. It is also the gateway to Jigokudani Onsen which is home to the Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), more commonly known as snow monkeys. Like humans, the snow monkeys also enjoy the benefits of the hot springs. Yudanaka is well worth a visit during any season of the year but winter provides a special atmosphere when visiting the park. A mug of hot chocolate and a piece of apple pie provide a wonderful ending to a memorable visit.
